About

Every step of the process is personal.
— Austin Davis, Knot'D Grain Woodworking

My name is Austin.

Knot’D Grain Woodworking grew as a result of my decision to prioritize my passion for woodworking and commit to it as a small business after moving into our home with my wife. Item to item my skills and interests expanded into the techniques I use now, gaining experience in furniture making, décor, kitchen serving and custom memorabilia. Because it has always been important to me to serve and support my community, my business refrains from outsourcing when at all possible, and we participate in local Southern Maryland events and giveaways.

Our products are made from locally sourced hardwoods that we hand-select from a small lumber yard. Those wood slabs are hand chosen by the yard’s owners and operators. Every step of the process is personal.

After picking the raw wood for the project, we finish it in our shop so that it is high grade and smooth to the touch. Our goal is to make your custom pieces last more than a lifetime, as heirlooms with the strength and beauty able to be passed down for generations. We create our projects as we would the furniture for our own home.

Our promise is to make you unique, one of a kind creations from the design phase all the way to the finished product. Each piece is carefully planned to accentuate the natural wood grain and imperfections that can occur in the material. I enjoy working with customers to help design and create special pieces for their home or as thoughtful gifts for those they care about.

Creating non-standard items is as exciting and fulfilling for me to do as it is seeing the finished product for the recipient, so please don’t hesitate to submit a quote or design request!

FAQs

What kind of wood do you use?

We hand select each piece of lumber from a local mill. Walnut, cherry, and maple are our favorites due to their colors, grain patterns, and longevity.

How do you treat the wood?

Each piece is treated with an oiled finish, using a natural, food-safe oil. No chemicals or paints are ever used on our designs.

How long does it take to finish?

It all depends on the size and intricacy of the item. Our designs are cut, joined, shaped, and finished by hand. We’re happy to discuss timelines with you when you submit your request for a quote.

How do I take care of my new item?

For cutting or serving boards, we recommend hand washing and applying food grade, cutting board oil when yours begins to look dry and pale. Cutting board oil is meant to be wiped onto a board after it has been washed, but make sure to check the directions on the product being used.

Furniture items are finished with the same oil as our boards, and for maintenance please use a damp cloth and then dry immediately. Use furniture oil afterwards in order to retain resilience against stains and scratches. Please treat with furniture oil regularly, at least once every 3 months. Use coasters and wipe spillage from your furniture immediately.

Where can I see your work in person?

We display items for sale during the year at local Southern Maryland events. Come see us next at the Kris Kringle Market at the Charles County Fairgrounds, December 8 - 10, 2023!
